International Education Symposium

Speakers in debate.

The City of Glasgow College’s annual International Education Symposium was an inspiring event from many perspectives. The building alone which was designed by students for students was impressive with its enormous atrium, natural lighting, large open staircase and multiple flexible spaces.

The welcoming hospitality was second to none. A pre-event meal created by Gary Maclean, MasterChef: The Professionals Champion 2016 and his students set the bar high. Mouthwatering, pieces of art were served in a synchronised fashion by attentive students; guests gasped and wowed at the works of art on the table in front of them. Not surprisingly, the digitally orientated guests Instagram’d the experience.

The following day continued in the Symposium #cogcdigisymp followed with the standards of excellence set the evening before. In the flexible, dual lecture theatre and conference environment had been created. Principal and Chief Executive, Paul Little’s keynote set the tone, enthralling us with his impressive vision for digital learning and the impact of dynamic technological change on student learning and employability. Leading figures from industry presented us with technologies, trends, facts and stories that seemed futuristic, yet available and accessible now, not in the future! Academics from across the globe provided an informative view of their practice, vision, and challenges.

As the founder of the LearningWheel, my philosophy is to collaborate and share practice for the greater good, this event epitomised that philosophy too.

I found the day to be very informative and stimulating… you could also say a wake-up call too. As a digital practitioner within education, I am aware of emerging technologies that will impact on education, however, after attending this event, it is clear the technological landscape is evolving faster than I had realised. It is paramount that educational institutes are supported to develop staff and students digital literacy skills to enable them not only to survive in today’s environment but thrive in the future.
